Be Kind

In everything you do, strive to be kind. When you have a disagreement, find the kind solution. When you are looking to make an improvement, find the kind way to implement. When you are interacting with strangers, find the kindness that connects you. Set kindness as your governing principle and filter all of your actions through that lens. You will not always succeed, no one ever does, but aiming for an impossible goal is a great way to achieve more than you might otherwise accomplish. If you find that your action is not being kind, ask yourself why not, and then, even more importantly, ask yourself if that answer is good enough for you. Adjust accordingly.

Our View

We cannot see all things. Sometimes when we think we can see the most is exactly when we are really seeing the least. The universe exists independent of our perception of it, and we can only do our best to interpret those fragments we can perceive. Understand, first of all, that everyone is working within the same limited perception. You are not lesser because you do not have all of the answers. Understand next that you do not understand as much as you believe you do. There is always more. Be ready to learn. Be ready to change. Be ready to grow. Be open to the fullness of the universe.

Offer Sanctuary

No matter how chaotic it gets outside, foster a place of peace inside. Hold within your thoughts a stillness that can be your foundation for a better way, and then build upon that better way until you have a sanctuary within that can guard you from the troubles without. Storms will come and troubles will come. You cannot prevent these things from happening, but you can prepare a response, and you can take precautions that will lessen their impacts. Hold firm to the stillness within, and find that you are more able to withstand the forces from without.

The Heart Crosses It

We see problems and we usually want to fix them. In most cases, we have been trained to look for the solutions in the same places and through the same means that were used to create or find the problems, and sometimes this works. Sometimes it is useful to "fight fire with fire," so to speak, but only sometimes. Sometimes you will not see the solution with the same eyes that see the problem. Sometimes you have to believe in the solution and then take that leap of faith. Sometimes you have to follow your heart to create a new world.

Attune to Peace

Life is a struggle - there's really no way around that - but it can be a struggle toward a positive nature as much as toward a negative one, and the former offers a much better outcome. Do we struggle for the purpose of struggling, or do we struggle for an outcome beyond the struggling? Do we fight to show off how we can fight, or do we fight to accomplish a life where we don't need to fight? It isn't easy, and it isn't a one-stop-shop, but when the goal is peace the outlook on everything else changes.

Life Begins

You have many reasons to be afraid, and you will probably be afraid many times in your life. When those times come, you have two choices: You can cower in the dark and hope it goes away, or you can face your fear and act anyway. Life is about being afraid and doing it anyway. Life is about what you did when you were afraid. Life is what happens on the other side of fear. When you are hiding in the dark, you are not living. When you are lifting your light to take on the dark, that is when you are truly alive. Don't wait to not be afraid. That day may never come. Feel your fear, face your fear, and act anyway. Live your life, no matter your fear.

Inspire The World

If we're being honest with ourselves, everyone is afraid. Maybe not all of the time, and maybe not about all things, but no one is fearless. No one faces the world with confidence at all times in all things. We are all afraid, and it's not like we don't have reason to be. We are small, fragile creatures in a large and often disruptive universe. There are forces careening around us that we can't hope to control, but never forget that there are also forces that are entirely ours to control. We are all afraid, but don't let fear run your life. Live anyway. Do the task anyway. Show the world that fear will not stop you, and inspire others to do the same.

Overcoming It

Remember that you will almost always see what you spend time searching for. There is much suffering in the world, it is true, but there is also much overcoming in the world. There is much building and laughing and loving in the world. All is not lost simply because you have focused on one direction and have chosen not to see the others. We must look at the suffering if we are to help address the suffering, but we cannot get so focused on that one view that we forget to look up at times and see the rest of the world. Take a look around sometimes and remember that there is more to life than suffering. Remember that it really is possible to live better.

Part Of Success

No matter what you do in life, there will be times that you do not succeed. No one is perfect and everyone misses the mark at times. Failure is a better teacher than success because failure has more to teach. Learn from your mistakes and use your failures to help build a better success. In that way not only will you achieve something more in the end, but you will be better equipped to handle your success when you get there. You will know what the other side is like, you will have learned about the pitfalls, and you will be able to set your success on a more solid foundation.

Lifting Others

We often hear stories about how certain people climbed over others to "get to the top," but what are those people really getting to the top of? A career that will take more and more of their time and leave them with less and less meaningful relationships? That seems to be most often, in such scenarios. Don't know about you, but that sounds like a mountain I don't want to be on top of. I will instead choose the mountain that is climbed together, the mountain whose top is reached by assisting other people to arrive as well. The more we climb together the more we accomplish together, and the better world we can create.

The Best Teachers

There are lessons everywhere, and every experience in your life can be a teacher. Some will say, some will do, and some will show, but the best will open the way. The best teachers will guide you in a direction, but allow you to walk. The best teachers will give you the books but allow you to read. The best teachers will answer your questions, but encourage you to ask, and then will ask additional questions that will open new avenues of approach. The best teachers will also be the best students, because there is always more to learn, and a good student can learn from anyone.

A Little Kindness

A little kindness goes a long way. A smile, a gentle touch, holding the door. Kindness is often encompassed within the smallest gestures, but it can have the greatest impact. A little kindness can be a ray of sunshine after a hard day, and you may never know who is having the hardest day. Your smile make all the difference in a stranger's day, yet it cost you nothing and was easy to give. You won't always see the return, but you know it's there. Imagine all of the times that kindness has made your day then imagine how well that might spread to everyone around you. What a world we might make.

Love Is What You Do

Love is not in fine words and phrases. Love is not about gifts of flowers or material things. Love is not about how you dress or where you go. All of these things have their place and can be of benefit in demonstrating how you feel, but they are not, themselves, how you feel. Love, in its deepest truth, is what you do. When you love, you will act out of love, and that will be readily apparent regardless of other considerations. When you love, you will do what love demands, and you will be happy to do so.

Naked Before The World

Some people seek to avoid pain by hiding behind all of the armor they can learn how to use. They think this will protect them from the uncertainties of life, but what it really does is prevent them from experiencing life, in general. You cannot get the most out of life if you are not open to the possibilities of all of life. There are risks, to be sure, but there always are. Even those people armored against pain will still get hurt. Set down the armor, take that chance, and see what heights you can achieve.

The Cure For Grief

We will all experience grief in our lives, and we will not always know what to do with it. People will try to tell you a million things to help, or to alleviate, or to even discard grief, but none of these are guaranteed to work. Even if the person offering the advise means well and is speaking from experience, one person's experience will not be the same as another's. There is no right way or wrong way to grieve, but we all will grieve. The only way past it is through it. When you are there, allow yourself to be there, and then allow yourself to pass through. A new day will dawn.
