Go Wherever She Will

A river follows its course, but it does not pretend to what anything other than what it is. It ebbs and flows, and it will breach it banks and choose a new course, if the need should arise, but it will be a river and it will continue to flow, regardless. It does not ask permission, and it does not attempt to conceal its nature to appease or deceive. Be like the river, flowing where you must flow, and doing what you must do, in honesty and contentment. Be the best version of you that you can be, and your river will make its way as it needs and wills.

Impossible To Learn

You cannot learn what you believe you already know. You will try to answer, correct, even teach, but you will stand opposed to learning. It's nothing personal. It's just the way we're wired. Instead, approach things with a beginner's mind. Be open to new ideas. Understand that, even if you have taken a lesson before, it may still have new things to teach. Be humble in learning, and approach new ideas with wonder rather than with scorn. Concentrate on what you can learn, instead of what you already know, and you will continue to learn and grow.

Make The Most Of Today

Today is the only day when you know that you can make a difference. Yesterday is gone, and tomorrow may never come. Both of those days serve a purpose - one for memories and one for planning - but only today can be a day of action, and only action can change the world. No matter what you hope to accomplish, today is the day to take steps, do things, and make your hopes and dreams into physical realities. Make the most of today, because you only get that one chance.

Ought To Be

Nothing gets in the way of learning what life is more than our predetermined belief in what life ought to be. We come up believing things for various reasons - some well intentioned, some maybe not so much - and it's human nature to cling to those beliefs. The universe can be a confusing place, and believing that we know how at least some part of it works can be reassuring. Make sure, though, that you're not holding onto false assurance at the expense of learning. Be willing to reevaluate what you believe and see how it stands up to knew information when received. In that way, you will continue to learn and you will continue to grow.

Die With Memories

You have a limited amount of time to do the things you want to do and, while none of us know how much time that is, we all know we're on the clock. This isn't new information; we've all been told the same many times during our lives. What you may want to consider, though, is what you are doing with the time. You usually hear this message in the context of accomplishments and business goals, but it holds true for things like wonders visited, flowers smelled, and loved ones hugged as well. Don't forget, your limited time is limited in all ways, so choose your priorities and don't let your time go to waste.

Keep Moving

No matter what comes in life, keep moving. One step at a time is still moving. Taking a break and then continuing on is still moving. Taking a tumble, picking yourself up, and taking that next step is still moving. It isn't about speed. It isn't about distance. Movement is life, so keep moving. Move at your own pace, take breaks when you need them, but keep moving. The goal is not out there somewhere in front of you. Don't worry about having to hurry to some objective on the horizon. The goal is in that next step, and then your new goal is in the step after that one. The destination is the journey, so just keep moving. No matter the interruptions, just keep moving.

Infinite Hope

We will all face disappointments in life. We aren't always going to win, and things won't always go our way. We have to make peace with this fact, we have to make peace with the finite disappointments without losing hope in the long run. Hope is the ultimate weapon that can carry us through the worst storms. As long as we have hope we can keep going, and as long as we keep going we have reason to hope. It's an infinite loop that can be stronger than any struggles we face, if we only learn how to let it be so. Never let the smaller losses take away your greater hope. Keep hoping, and keep going.

The Ultimate Measure

Who you are in your most difficult moments is the true measure of who you really are. We can all do the thing when it is easy or convenient. We can all do the thing when everyone is cheering us and giving us the glowing rewards. What will you do when it takes all of the effort you have? What will you do when you stand alone, when no one is cheering you and no one is on your side? The decision you make in those moments is the decision that defines who you are, deep inside where the truth resides. Where it all matters. Be the person you need to be when you need it the most, and that is the person you will truly be at all times. Choose wisely, and be the right person.

The Time Is Always Right

There is no better time to do the right thing than right now. Any now. Every now. There will be times when it seems easier to do something else, when it seems like there might be less consequences to doing something else, but that is an illusion. Character is who you are when no one is looking, and every time you take that easy way out, you are establishing the character of someone who does not do the right thing. It isn't only about when people are looking or when it is easy. Doing the right thing is particularly important when no one is looking or when it is not the easy thing. That is when you demonstrate your real character. Always keep in mind who you want that character to be.

We Must Learn To Live

There are nearly 8 billion people on this planet, and current trends put that number closer to 10 billion within the lifetimes of many people reading these words. There is no rewind, there is no emergency escape pod, and there is no Get Out of Jail Free card. We all rise and fall together, in the long run. There are just too many of us for it to be any other way. If we don't learn how to live together, we will learn quickly how to die together. The dying part is easy. All too easy. Old solutions won't work in a new world. It's time we start looking ahead, and start trying out some new solutions.

Change Is Never Painful

Change is the natural state of being. It is the single constant in the universe. If you are living, you are changing, continually, even from one moment to the next. You are not the same person when you lay down at night as you were when you woke in the morning, and you likely didn't even notice the change. You almost certainly didn't notice as it was happening. It is not change that causes us discomfort. We never even notice most of the change around us until long after it has occurred. What bothers us, instead, is when we fight against change, when we try to hold the universe in place against all laws of reality. The way of life is change, and the way of being alive is to be changing. Keep learning, keep growing, and keep changing. That way you will keep living, and you will find the changes far less uncomfortable.

The Greatest Wealth

The person who measures wealth by the accumulation of things will never be content. There will always be more things to accumulate, and the more one has, it seems, the more one must continue to acquire in order to maintain the same level of reward. The person who measures wealth through the lens of being content will never need to accumulate things. If I am content to sit by a tree and watch the sunset, what more could I possibly acquire. I already have everything that matters, because I am content. The greatest wealth, then, lies in being content. Once you have achieved that, you have all you need.

I've Decided To Be Happy

We cannot always choose to be happy, but we can always choose to be happier. It is a subtle distinction, but one that matters. It does no good to pretend that outside influences, and even some inside influences, don't exist and cannot exert undue pressures, but it does even less good to allow those influences to have greater control than is warranted. I cannot control every circumstance in my life, but I can choose how to face those circumstances, and I can choose my own priorities in the matter of how much importance to give to those circumstances. It's a matter of perspective, and my perspective is that I will do what I can to make my life better. As long as I continue to make that choice, I am choosing to be happy.

The Greatest Prison

How much of yourself have you given away to the beliefs and ideas of other people? How much of your own growth have you sacrificed because you were afraid of what someone else would think? I am learning to be the master of my own life, but I am far from qualified to be the master of yours, and the same is true no matter who sits in the positions of "I" and "you". No one knows the specific needs and inner workings of your own life the way you do, so no one else is more qualified to govern the growth of your life. Accept advice, learn from others, but do not lock yourself inside a prison that does not need to exist. Let yourself grow and flourish, and be who you need to be.

Become Unshakable

The greatest asset you have is your own belief in yourself. It is with this tool that you will build all others, and it is this tool that cannot be taken from you except by your own will. If everyone around you believes in you yet you do not, it will be as a river lapping at a stone without the ability to do more than get the stone wet. It will accomplish something very close to nothing. If you believe in yourself, though, even in the absence of all other belief, it will be as that same river working away at the very root of the stone until it comes undone and everything changes. No one can change you the way you can. Use that, and see what you can accomplish.

Flowers Bloom

No matter how dark the night, the dawn will come. There is always tomorrow, and tomorrow is always a chance for hope. Flowers grow in the most unlikeliest of places, and hope can bloom from the deepest despair. Sometimes you need to sit down and take a break. That's fine. Catch your breath, recover your strength, and then take another step forward. As long as you continue to move forward there is reason to hope, and as long as you have hope you can make a difference. Don't give up. Keep going. Tomorrow's a new day, a new chance, a new beginning. Have hope.

Never Too Late

It is never too late to make a difference. It is never too late to try something new, or to be something new. You might have an epiphany on your death bed that could change the world. It's happened before. It can happen again. Don't despair and don't give up. You can begin again at any moment you choose, and you can change directions no matter how far you have traveled. You cannot redo the past, but every new step is a possible new beginning. Take that chance and make of it what you will. It's never too late to be who you choose to be.

Worth Something Now

Every soul is a diamond in the rough. You might not be able to see the shine right now, but that is only because it has not been polished. A little work, a little effort, some thought in the right direction, and you will sparkle like a brilliant sun. You will not, however, have suddenly become worthy. Your value does not just appear out of nowhere because you have found your shine. Your worth was always there. It was just waiting for you to discover it. You are the most valuable thing you will ever own, and you are that valuable right now. You are already worth every bit of effort it might take to find and bring out your best self.

Witness The Mind

There is a misunderstanding that we are intending to conquer the mind, that the ideals of such things as meditation, self improvement, etc., are the subjugate the self and to subdue thought. As I said, this is a misunderstanding. If you are trying to wrestle with your own mind, that will be a long and contested battle, with very little likelihood of there ever being a winner. Your mind knows all of your strengths and weaknesses. Do you know your mind's? That, of course, is the point. It is like Judo. Learn, and work with the flow, rather than trying to fight against it, and you will accomplish so much more, with far less difficulty.

Between Your Thoughts

Welcome back. I hope everyone had a good holiday season. Now you are entering 2020 rested and relaxed, ready to seize the future and create a new world, right? No? Anyone else need a vacation from their vacation? Things never quite go the way we expect them to go, do they? That is, of course, the nature of things, and part of the challenge of doing what we do and being who we are. The surface is only the surface, and rarely demonstrates anything real. Look past that, look behind the words and the symbols. Try to find the you between the thoughts. See what you can learn from that. Happy new year.
