The Heart Crosses It

We see problems and we usually want to fix them. In most cases, we have been trained to look for the solutions in the same places and through the same means that were used to create or find the problems, and sometimes this works. Sometimes it is useful to "fight fire with fire," so to speak, but only sometimes. Sometimes you will not see the solution with the same eyes that see the problem. Sometimes you have to believe in the solution and then take that leap of faith. Sometimes you have to follow your heart to create a new world.

Attune to Peace

Life is a struggle - there's really no way around that - but it can be a struggle toward a positive nature as much as toward a negative one, and the former offers a much better outcome. Do we struggle for the purpose of struggling, or do we struggle for an outcome beyond the struggling? Do we fight to show off how we can fight, or do we fight to accomplish a life where we don't need to fight? It isn't easy, and it isn't a one-stop-shop, but when the goal is peace the outlook on everything else changes.

Life Begins

You have many reasons to be afraid, and you will probably be afraid many times in your life. When those times come, you have two choices: You can cower in the dark and hope it goes away, or you can face your fear and act anyway. Life is about being afraid and doing it anyway. Life is about what you did when you were afraid. Life is what happens on the other side of fear. When you are hiding in the dark, you are not living. When you are lifting your light to take on the dark, that is when you are truly alive. Don't wait to not be afraid. That day may never come. Feel your fear, face your fear, and act anyway. Live your life, no matter your fear.

Inspire The World

If we're being honest with ourselves, everyone is afraid. Maybe not all of the time, and maybe not about all things, but no one is fearless. No one faces the world with confidence at all times in all things. We are all afraid, and it's not like we don't have reason to be. We are small, fragile creatures in a large and often disruptive universe. There are forces careening around us that we can't hope to control, but never forget that there are also forces that are entirely ours to control. We are all afraid, but don't let fear run your life. Live anyway. Do the task anyway. Show the world that fear will not stop you, and inspire others to do the same.

Overcoming It

Remember that you will almost always see what you spend time searching for. There is much suffering in the world, it is true, but there is also much overcoming in the world. There is much building and laughing and loving in the world. All is not lost simply because you have focused on one direction and have chosen not to see the others. We must look at the suffering if we are to help address the suffering, but we cannot get so focused on that one view that we forget to look up at times and see the rest of the world. Take a look around sometimes and remember that there is more to life than suffering. Remember that it really is possible to live better.

Part Of Success

No matter what you do in life, there will be times that you do not succeed. No one is perfect and everyone misses the mark at times. Failure is a better teacher than success because failure has more to teach. Learn from your mistakes and use your failures to help build a better success. In that way not only will you achieve something more in the end, but you will be better equipped to handle your success when you get there. You will know what the other side is like, you will have learned about the pitfalls, and you will be able to set your success on a more solid foundation.

Lifting Others

We often hear stories about how certain people climbed over others to "get to the top," but what are those people really getting to the top of? A career that will take more and more of their time and leave them with less and less meaningful relationships? That seems to be most often, in such scenarios. Don't know about you, but that sounds like a mountain I don't want to be on top of. I will instead choose the mountain that is climbed together, the mountain whose top is reached by assisting other people to arrive as well. The more we climb together the more we accomplish together, and the better world we can create.

The Best Teachers

There are lessons everywhere, and every experience in your life can be a teacher. Some will say, some will do, and some will show, but the best will open the way. The best teachers will guide you in a direction, but allow you to walk. The best teachers will give you the books but allow you to read. The best teachers will answer your questions, but encourage you to ask, and then will ask additional questions that will open new avenues of approach. The best teachers will also be the best students, because there is always more to learn, and a good student can learn from anyone.

A Little Kindness

A little kindness goes a long way. A smile, a gentle touch, holding the door. Kindness is often encompassed within the smallest gestures, but it can have the greatest impact. A little kindness can be a ray of sunshine after a hard day, and you may never know who is having the hardest day. Your smile make all the difference in a stranger's day, yet it cost you nothing and was easy to give. You won't always see the return, but you know it's there. Imagine all of the times that kindness has made your day then imagine how well that might spread to everyone around you. What a world we might make.

Love Is What You Do

Love is not in fine words and phrases. Love is not about gifts of flowers or material things. Love is not about how you dress or where you go. All of these things have their place and can be of benefit in demonstrating how you feel, but they are not, themselves, how you feel. Love, in its deepest truth, is what you do. When you love, you will act out of love, and that will be readily apparent regardless of other considerations. When you love, you will do what love demands, and you will be happy to do so.

Naked Before The World

Some people seek to avoid pain by hiding behind all of the armor they can learn how to use. They think this will protect them from the uncertainties of life, but what it really does is prevent them from experiencing life, in general. You cannot get the most out of life if you are not open to the possibilities of all of life. There are risks, to be sure, but there always are. Even those people armored against pain will still get hurt. Set down the armor, take that chance, and see what heights you can achieve.

The Cure For Grief

We will all experience grief in our lives, and we will not always know what to do with it. People will try to tell you a million things to help, or to alleviate, or to even discard grief, but none of these are guaranteed to work. Even if the person offering the advise means well and is speaking from experience, one person's experience will not be the same as another's. There is no right way or wrong way to grieve, but we all will grieve. The only way past it is through it. When you are there, allow yourself to be there, and then allow yourself to pass through. A new day will dawn.

Go Wherever She Will

A river follows its course, but it does not pretend to what anything other than what it is. It ebbs and flows, and it will breach it banks and choose a new course, if the need should arise, but it will be a river and it will continue to flow, regardless. It does not ask permission, and it does not attempt to conceal its nature to appease or deceive. Be like the river, flowing where you must flow, and doing what you must do, in honesty and contentment. Be the best version of you that you can be, and your river will make its way as it needs and wills.

Impossible To Learn

You cannot learn what you believe you already know. You will try to answer, correct, even teach, but you will stand opposed to learning. It's nothing personal. It's just the way we're wired. Instead, approach things with a beginner's mind. Be open to new ideas. Understand that, even if you have taken a lesson before, it may still have new things to teach. Be humble in learning, and approach new ideas with wonder rather than with scorn. Concentrate on what you can learn, instead of what you already know, and you will continue to learn and grow.

Make The Most Of Today

Today is the only day when you know that you can make a difference. Yesterday is gone, and tomorrow may never come. Both of those days serve a purpose - one for memories and one for planning - but only today can be a day of action, and only action can change the world. No matter what you hope to accomplish, today is the day to take steps, do things, and make your hopes and dreams into physical realities. Make the most of today, because you only get that one chance.

Ought To Be

Nothing gets in the way of learning what life is more than our predetermined belief in what life ought to be. We come up believing things for various reasons - some well intentioned, some maybe not so much - and it's human nature to cling to those beliefs. The universe can be a confusing place, and believing that we know how at least some part of it works can be reassuring. Make sure, though, that you're not holding onto false assurance at the expense of learning. Be willing to reevaluate what you believe and see how it stands up to knew information when received. In that way, you will continue to learn and you will continue to grow.

Die With Memories

You have a limited amount of time to do the things you want to do and, while none of us know how much time that is, we all know we're on the clock. This isn't new information; we've all been told the same many times during our lives. What you may want to consider, though, is what you are doing with the time. You usually hear this message in the context of accomplishments and business goals, but it holds true for things like wonders visited, flowers smelled, and loved ones hugged as well. Don't forget, your limited time is limited in all ways, so choose your priorities and don't let your time go to waste.

Keep Moving

No matter what comes in life, keep moving. One step at a time is still moving. Taking a break and then continuing on is still moving. Taking a tumble, picking yourself up, and taking that next step is still moving. It isn't about speed. It isn't about distance. Movement is life, so keep moving. Move at your own pace, take breaks when you need them, but keep moving. The goal is not out there somewhere in front of you. Don't worry about having to hurry to some objective on the horizon. The goal is in that next step, and then your new goal is in the step after that one. The destination is the journey, so just keep moving. No matter the interruptions, just keep moving.

Infinite Hope

We will all face disappointments in life. We aren't always going to win, and things won't always go our way. We have to make peace with this fact, we have to make peace with the finite disappointments without losing hope in the long run. Hope is the ultimate weapon that can carry us through the worst storms. As long as we have hope we can keep going, and as long as we keep going we have reason to hope. It's an infinite loop that can be stronger than any struggles we face, if we only learn how to let it be so. Never let the smaller losses take away your greater hope. Keep hoping, and keep going.

The Ultimate Measure

Who you are in your most difficult moments is the true measure of who you really are. We can all do the thing when it is easy or convenient. We can all do the thing when everyone is cheering us and giving us the glowing rewards. What will you do when it takes all of the effort you have? What will you do when you stand alone, when no one is cheering you and no one is on your side? The decision you make in those moments is the decision that defines who you are, deep inside where the truth resides. Where it all matters. Be the person you need to be when you need it the most, and that is the person you will truly be at all times. Choose wisely, and be the right person.

The Time Is Always Right

There is no better time to do the right thing than right now. Any now. Every now. There will be times when it seems easier to do something else, when it seems like there might be less consequences to doing something else, but that is an illusion. Character is who you are when no one is looking, and every time you take that easy way out, you are establishing the character of someone who does not do the right thing. It isn't only about when people are looking or when it is easy. Doing the right thing is particularly important when no one is looking or when it is not the easy thing. That is when you demonstrate your real character. Always keep in mind who you want that character to be.

We Must Learn To Live

There are nearly 8 billion people on this planet, and current trends put that number closer to 10 billion within the lifetimes of many people reading these words. There is no rewind, there is no emergency escape pod, and there is no Get Out of Jail Free card. We all rise and fall together, in the long run. There are just too many of us for it to be any other way. If we don't learn how to live together, we will learn quickly how to die together. The dying part is easy. All too easy. Old solutions won't work in a new world. It's time we start looking ahead, and start trying out some new solutions.

Change Is Never Painful

Change is the natural state of being. It is the single constant in the universe. If you are living, you are changing, continually, even from one moment to the next. You are not the same person when you lay down at night as you were when you woke in the morning, and you likely didn't even notice the change. You almost certainly didn't notice as it was happening. It is not change that causes us discomfort. We never even notice most of the change around us until long after it has occurred. What bothers us, instead, is when we fight against change, when we try to hold the universe in place against all laws of reality. The way of life is change, and the way of being alive is to be changing. Keep learning, keep growing, and keep changing. That way you will keep living, and you will find the changes far less uncomfortable.

The Greatest Wealth

The person who measures wealth by the accumulation of things will never be content. There will always be more things to accumulate, and the more one has, it seems, the more one must continue to acquire in order to maintain the same level of reward. The person who measures wealth through the lens of being content will never need to accumulate things. If I am content to sit by a tree and watch the sunset, what more could I possibly acquire. I already have everything that matters, because I am content. The greatest wealth, then, lies in being content. Once you have achieved that, you have all you need.

I've Decided To Be Happy

We cannot always choose to be happy, but we can always choose to be happier. It is a subtle distinction, but one that matters. It does no good to pretend that outside influences, and even some inside influences, don't exist and cannot exert undue pressures, but it does even less good to allow those influences to have greater control than is warranted. I cannot control every circumstance in my life, but I can choose how to face those circumstances, and I can choose my own priorities in the matter of how much importance to give to those circumstances. It's a matter of perspective, and my perspective is that I will do what I can to make my life better. As long as I continue to make that choice, I am choosing to be happy.
