The Things You Have

To want more, to want to do more, to want to be more; these are all natural desires that often govern how we proceed through life. They are the reason we take steps to better ourselves and our place in the world, but they can also, if we are not careful, blind us to ourselves and our place in the world. Never get so caught up in where you are going that you forget where you are. Never worry so much about what you are trying to achieve that you forget what you already have. Be grateful for today, even as you are preparing for tomorrow.

For my birthday, coming up on November 30, I am asking for donations to support the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. I would appreciate any support you can provide, and please help spread the word. Thank you.

I will be on vacation next week (yes, it's that time of year again, when I have to start using time or losing it), so there will be no regular updates. Happy Thanksgiving, if you celebrate. Enjoy time with your loved ones, regardless of your holidays, and I'll see you in a week or so. Namaste.

When Things Go Wrong

When things go wrong, we tend to focus on that wrong to the exclusion of all else. The wrong becomes so much larger because of the additional life we are feeding into it and, soon, it might become all we can see regardless of where we look. Instead, to prevent this from happening, this would be the perfect time to take a step back and take stock of those things that are right. When you are not feeling grateful because things have gone wrong is the perfect time to take stock of those things that are right, to help reset your perspective.

Shown In Actions

When you are truly grateful, you can't help but show it. Words are a nice beginning, but they will never be enough to express the full meaning of what you feel. When you are truly grateful, you will need people to see it because you won't be able to contain the feeling. When you put that out in the world, you are putting out positive experiences that can't help but generate additional positive experiences. A grateful person is a joy to be around, and the actions of a grateful person will be fantastic building blocks for a better world.

Express Gratitude

Expressing gratitude is a healthy experience that will result in your having more cause to express gratitude. That's just how it works. In the general course of events, there is nothing that will give you more cause for gratitude than an open, grateful spirit. You are more likely to see what you seek. If you seek the negative, you will find the negative. If you seek the positive, you will find the positive. Go looking for reasons to be grateful, and you will likely not have enough time in the day to count your blessings.

What A Privilege

Whatever you do, if you begin with gratitude you are beginning from a better place. Start all things with a positive outlook, and you will be more inclined to continue in that way. When you do things with a positive outlook, you are more inclined to do things completely and with an eye for detail that will assist you with doing your best work. Be grateful that you can do what you are doing, and you will be more grateful that you have done it in the end.

Real Courage

You are not going to succeed in everything you try. Odds are good that you won't even accomplish 100% success in any single day. There are going to be mistakes and failures. There are going to be times when you have to start over, and there are going to be times when you have to abandon one course and try something else entirely new. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try or how true your best effort, you will simply not get or accomplish what you want. Do it anyway. Keep trying, keep failing, and keep learning. That's real courage, and real courage will lead to more real successes.

We Are All Leaves

We are all leaves, individual and fragile, but leaves do not exist alone. We are all connected by branches and a unified trunk that creates a whole far more sturdy than its individual pieces. None of us exists purely in the space of another, but none of us exists wholly alone either. We are individuals part of a larger whole, and we all exist in more than one way at a time. This is the fascination, and the strength, of who we are. Our existence does not have simple answers, but we are more than we sometimes believe.

Observe Your Pain

Life is about exploring, and you can't really explore without getting a few bumps and bruises along the way. You're going to take wrong turns, you're going to fall down, and, quite frankly, life is going to drop surprises on you that you just weren't expecting. Sometimes it's going to hurt. Don't hide from that. Everything in your life can teach you something. Observe your pain and see what lesson you can find within it. See what you can learn, and then take the time to actually learn. Knowing the lesson is there does you no good if you don't embrace it.

Abandon Our Views

The human race is notorious for getting stuck in its ways. How often do you hear, "We've always done it this way" as the only answer to, "Why?" It should come as no surprise, if you think about it, that "we've always done it this way" is a terrible answer. There might be a valid reason to continue doing something in the same way, but inertia is not that valid answer. Life is about growth, and growth is about learning new things. If you aren't learning new things, can you really be said to be living? Get out there and grow. Make sure you are living.

Off To Great Places

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a great week, and a very enjoyable Halloween. In light of the fact that our neighborhood doesn't see much trick-or-treating, we did something different this year and took in a movie as a family. It was a good way to do something different, rather than being disappointed in things not going the way you prefer, and that's a good lesson we can all take to heart. Don't get stuck with one idea. It's a wide world, and you can go in many directions. Look around and explore.
