This Is Halloween 2019

It's that time of year again when the ghosts and goblins are wandering the night in search of treats. There will also be children. I kid, of course, but it's a time for kids and a time for kidding.

It can also be a time for serious reflection, though. In some of the oldest traditions, this was the time of the New Year, a time to remember and honor the past while looking toward the mysterious future. A seat was saved at table for the departed loved ones. Goods were sought and set aside for the coming winter. It was very much an Anything Is Possible kind of time.

Let this be your Anything Is Possible kind of time. Honor your past and respect what it has taught you, look forward and prepare for what is to come, but live today. Never forget to live today.

And never forget to have fun! Look around you. Do you see all of those spectacular costumes? Do you hear all of that laughter? Can you feel the excitement? Join the children, laugh with the children, and remember, sometimes they understand better than we do. They haven't forgotten the important stuff.

If you're out and about, please be careful and pay attention. Children may still remember some important stuff, but Watch Where You're Going when excited often isn't on the list. Let's keep it fun and safe for everyone, and have a very Happy Halloween.

This one has become a Halloween tradition here at Frequently Interrupted. We hope you appreciate the reminder, and we hope you have a happy and safe Halloween. Enjoy, and see you next week!

Set You Free

Fear often holds us prisoner, but we tend to forget that prison doors serve two purposes. Yes, clearly the door is barring our way and preventing us from going where we might wish to go, but the door is also a demarcation. It is a border between here and there. It is the line that separates the prisoner from freedom. Fear holds us back, but it also helps us to see where we should be going. On the other side of fear is everything that you want, and everything that you can be. Face your fear, walk through your fear, and find freedom on the other side.

***
I will be on vacation next week, so there will be no regular updates. As always, I will share things if I see things to share, and I look forward to seeing your Halloween pictures on whatever social media platforms we might share. Have a safe and happy Halloween, and I'll see you on the other side.

Past Ghosts

Our past ghosts often hold us back more than anything else in our lives. Those things we failed to do before, or failed to get right. Those things that we did but now wish we had not done. The past haunts us and stands in our way more than anything that is truly before us, but the past is gone. It cannot block us from going forward unless we allow it. Ghosts have no power except that which we give them, so don't give it to them. Leave the ghosts of the past in the past where they below, and get busy living in your present and preparing the way for your future.

Anything You Want

On Halloween, we put on masks to become anything we want to be, but what if we didn't wait until Halloween, and what if we didn't require masks? What if, instead, we set out every day to become whatever it is that we want to be? What would you do if you weren't afraid? The Halloween tradition is to use a mask so that those things that make us afraid will not recognize us and we can go about our business unmolested. Our masks give us freedom, but they also create a dependence. What if, instead, we treat every day as a day to be who we need to be, and then go about our business every day as though it is something we should be doing? What might we accomplish then?

Use Your Imagination

It does no good to find your imagination if you don't then set out to use your imagination. Imagine the improvements you can add to your life and to the world around you. Imagine what you can do if you only believe in yourself and do it. Your imagination has, no doubt, served up plenty of goblins and monsters hiding in the shadows or lurking around the corners, but what if, instead, you used it to find the light and the possibilities. Just imagine what you might do if you allow your imagination to be a power that propels you. Imagine it, and then do it.

Find The Imagination

Halloween is fast approaching, and this is a time of year to remember some important lessons. Imagination is the secret weapon of the human mind. It is what sets us apart from so much of the world. You will hear about reason and planning, calculation and deduction, and all of those are important qualities in their own right, but imagination is what allows any of them to work. Imagination is the ability to see things that aren't there. Imagination is "What if?" and extrapolation, and dreams. Imagination is hope. Imagine what you can do and then get out there are start doing it.

Practice Compassion

Compassion is at the center of all positive change. Compassion for others reminds you that they are doing their best and learning at their own pace. Compassion for yourself reminds you that you are doing your best and learning at your own pace. Try to have patience in all things with all people. Just as the people around you do not know all of your limitations and burdens, remember that you do not know all of the limitations and burdens of the people around you. Compassion can help to prevent making a good situation bad or a bad situation worse. Practice compassion in all that you do to help make the world a better place.

Let It Go

No matter how hard you try, there will be some things you cannot do and some things you cannot change. Make peace with that. To do otherwise is to undo all of those things that you can do and can change. If you are focusing your efforts where they cannot accomplish any good, imagine how much real good you are leaving undone. Put your efforts where they can accomplish something, and trust that others will do the same. None of us are in this world entirely alone. Our efforts will combine and the results will be greater than any single individual. Do your part, and let the rest go.

Remake Ourselves

We have only limited control over the world around us, at best. In some ways and in some places, we may have no control at all. What we can control with far more surety, however, is ourselves. If you want to improve the world, the best place to start is with yourself. That is where you can do the most, and that is where you can exert the most influence. The more you change, the more the world around you will change as a natural consequence. As more people change, this will create a chain reaction of change that can remake the entire world.

The Most We Should Expect

It is a simple fact that there will be times when the best you can do will not be enough. You are not going to succeed every time in everything that you do. It is still true, even in those times, that the best you can do is the best you can do, and the same is true for everyone around you. Do not demand, either from yourself or from others, more than can be accomplished. Understand and accept that there will be failures. Learn from these failures. That's why they exist. As long as you are honestly doing your best and honestly learning, no one can reasonable ask for more. Not even you.

Fear Of Failure

Nothing holds us back more than our own fears. The fear of failing. The fear of being laughed at. The fear of losing something important. All of these things and more get in our way more than any other obstacles, and, unlike any other obstacles, this one is entirely internal. Your fear is your own, completely within your own thought and emotion. Imagine what you could do if you were not allowing your own mind to hold you back. That inner voice belongs to you, so make sure it is not controlling you. Do not give into fear.

Be An Encourager

The world can be a difficult place. There never seems to be any shortage of people waiting to tear down other people and make things even more difficult. Whatever you do, try to not be one of those people. Lift up the positive. Promote the light. Encourage kindness and harmony. When you are faced with a moral dilemma, ask yourself if there is a path that will bring pain and if there is a path that will bring hope, then choose hope. It won't always be easy, and it may not look like it gets what you want in the immediate moment, but it will get you closer to the world you truly believe in. Always choose hope.

Everything Becomes Clear

When your thoughts are turbulent they are difficult to see clearly. Your thoughts are happening in and around you, but they are not you. You are not your thoughts and your thoughts are not you. When they are cloudy with fear, anger, and confusion, you will have no more success in trying to understand them than would anyone else. Even with your own thoughts, you are looking from the outside in, and troubled waters make that difficult to see. Be calm, and let the waters calm. Wait and be patient. When you can see clearly, you may learn that you see differently.

Five Things To Quit

We all have bad habits, and those habits can get in the way of what we hope to accomplish with our lives. For most of us, those habits often boil down to five basic things. If you can work on stopping these five things, you will put most of your worst habits, if not away completely, at least where you can more effectively work around them. Take care of these five things, and you life will improve. That much is guaranteed.

Struggling, Not Failing

You don't need me to tell you that things will be difficult sometimes. I trust that, if you're reading this, you have learned that particular lesson many times over. You have stumbled and probably even fallen more times than you like to admit. Don't let that lesson beat you down, though, and never give up. Sometimes life will be hard, but you're not failing just because you're having a hard time. Hard times are built in. Keep going, keep trying, and you're automatically not failing. That, too, is built in. Keep going.

Headed For Sunshine

Your path will take you through an assortment of issues and conditions. Sometimes it will be difficult to see the way. Sometimes the storms will make it difficult to go on. Always remember, though, that these difficulties are short term and isolated. No matter what is happening right in this immediate moment, the sun is still shining, above it all, and you will see that glory again. All it requires is a little patience and a little persistence. Keep going, and you will make it through the storm.

Listen To Silence

We are surrounded by the noise of the world at every turn, but sometimes what we need most is simply silence. That does not mean only getting away from the turmoil of daily life, but it means quieting our own thoughts as well. There is an old expression that we have two ears and one mouth for a reason, and we should use them in accordance with that ratio. Spend time listening when there is nothing to be heard, and you may learn that there was so much more than you were previously experiencing. Listen to the silence, and learn what it can teach you.

Calmness Is Power

We are bombarded daily with images and ideas of what it means to be strong and in control, but true strength is quiet. Real strength lies in not responding to provocation. True mastery comes from knowing your own thoughts and not requiring external validation. The heart of real power resides in facing the storm of the world with calm resolve. There are many steps along the path but, when you have learned these things, you will have opened up a whole new understanding.

Stop Your Thoughts

Your thoughts have a tendency to run like a raging river, dragging you from place to place and forcing you to respond. You cannot control the raging river, but you do not need to control it in order to prevent it from controlling you. Tie up your boat when it needs to be tied. Use your oars and guide your craft in the direction you wish to go. Disembark from time to time and experience the calm on the bank while you regain your strength and composure. You cannot control the river, yet still you can guide your own journey.

Wonderful Moment

This moment is life. The past is gone and the future has not yet come. All that we truly have, all that we really are, is this one precious moment in time, yet that is enough. This moment was grown from the past that has already occurred. This moment is the seed of all that might lay ahead. This moment encompasses everything that ever was and ever will be. What a wonderful moment that must be, and how much potential does it contain? Live this moment like it is your entire life, and your entire life may be this wonderful moment.
