That Will Do

Don't try to be too much of one thing. That isn't what we are. The human mind is meant to be faceted. It is meant to encompass more than one idea in more than one way. To focus too obsessively on any one thing is to surrender a piece of your humanity. Even to dwell too permanently in any one way of living is to dim the human experience. Be wise and foolish. Be adventurous and cautious. Be daring and reserved. Be what you need to be when it is appropriate to be it, and know that, if done well, you can do all of these things without straying from the center of who you are.

Blow The Rest Away

The world is full of lessons, and no one will learn them all. Many of these lessons aren't even for everyone. Pay attention to the teachers you meet along the way. See what they have to say and how it fits within your life. Learn that many of them do not fit at all. That's okay. Those will fit someone else somewhere else. They aren't for you, but there are plenty of others that are. Keep what is for you and, with all courtesy and consideration, leave the rest behind. There is room for us all, so long as we allow there to be room. Learn your lessons, and let everyone else do the same.

When You Are Comfortable

Each of us must walk our own path, and that path will not always make sense to those around us. When you have taken the time to learn your path, to gain a real understanding of your path and how it interacts with who you are, you will learn things about yourself that cannot be learned any other way. Once you have done this, once you are comfortable with what you have learned, you will also be comfortable with the way other people might respond. Your path is not their path, and that is okay. We must each walk our own path and find our own place in the world.

Hours From Our Lives

Everything we do, everything we accomplish, everything we make in our lives is made from our lives. Any other cost associated is just a translation. Just as a dollar (or a yuan or a rupee) has no intrinsic value in itself but only in what it represents, so to are the costs we tend to think of when we are working on anything. The money you spend isn't money, it's time. It's always time. Time is the real cost of everything you do, and it's a cost you can never get back. Make sure you are spending it well.

You Can Be Happy

Goals are great, and wanting to get or accomplish something is often how we move the world forward. If success in those endeavors, however, is your key to happiness, you are in for some serious disappointment. It is critical that we all understand happiness does not come from what we get. If you do not build your happiness from within, you are not building real happiness. Happiness that is derived from outside circumstances can be taken away. Don't let your happiness depend on what can be taken away.

The Storm Will Pass

Do not try to control the world. It is too big, and it will roll right over you without even noticing. Think of it as Judo. You do not plant yourself in the path of a charging opponent and hope to turn them around. Instead, you move yourself, and your opponent moves as a direct result. You cannot control the world, but you can control yourself, and doing so inevitably shapes the world around you. The immovable moves simply because you did. Focus your energy where it can be of use, and you may find that it does far more than you expected. You can make a better world by making yourself better.

I will be out of town next week, traveling for the day job, so there will be no regular updates. As always, I'll share if I see anything, and we'll be back to normal the following week. See you then, and have a great week.

Peaceful Inside

You will never find your center of peace from without. A gurgling stream or a quiet library can help, but they cannot create your peace. If peace does not begin from within it cannot last. It will slip away from you with every distraction. It will shake free with every bump in the road, and life's road is quite bumpy. There is no way around that. If you want peace, will will have to find it within. Only then will it be real and lasting. Once you have found it within, you will begin to see peace more and more often without. That is the way the world works, so work with it.

The Way We See

We often see exactly what we going looking for. The world is filled with every sort of variety you can think of, but we tend to notice those parts we were already expecting. Change your point of view, and see how your perspective changes. It's not magic. You won't make the bad go away, but you may find there was more good than you realized. You may find there were tools and even entire paths you were overlooking. Look for the good and you will find some good. What you do with it then is up to you.

You Are Winning

Some people struggle more than others. For some, every day is a fight, and that fight can be very tiring. If you are someone who fights every day, pay careful attention to me: you are winning. That you are reading these words says you are doing better than you might thing. Hold onto that, and keep going. If you know someone who is fighting every day, try to understand what they are going through. Try to understand how tired they are. Do what you can to help, and especially do what you can to not make things worse. Every day might be a new fight, but every day can also be a new victory. Keep going.

It Takes Time

Impatience is a hallmark of the human race, and that is no more evident than when we are trying to improve something. Especially when we are trying to improve ourselves. If we are being genuine, if we really want to improve, we can often be our own worst critics, and that isn't as helpful as one might think. It's easy to get frustrated if you think something isn't going well, and frustrated people have a tendency to give up and quit. Have a little patience with yourself, and let things move at the pace they will move. Take your time, and just keep going.

Fateful Detours

"Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans." ("Beautiful Boy" - John Lennon) No matter how well you think you may map out your life, it's going to happen in other ways that you could not predict, and that is just fine. You won't learn by only following the road you know or think you understand. Branch out and look closely at the other paths around you. Pay attention to what they have to teach, and learn whatever it is that you can learn. We grow when we explore the unexpected, so get out there and explore.

A Great Thing

No man is an island, no matter how some might try to be. I cannot live my life alone, and neither can you. The world is made up of so many experiences and so much possibility, no one person can ever learn everything, and there is no reason to do so. We have each other, and that is how we make up the difference. What I know and can do combines with what you know and can do, and together we make more than any of us could do alone. We each do have more power than we often believe, but together we can change the world.

Happiness And Peace

The world around us is made up of a combination of actions. Everything I do goes into making that world, and everything you do does as well. The actions and experiences of all of us combine into something that is more than any one of us, but it is still distinctly influenced by each and every one of us. The best way to get more happiness and peace out of the world is to put more happiness and peace into the world. What you give to others will help define the world around you. Guide well that definition so that it can help create a world in which you want to live.

Who We Are

Most of us spend most of our lives being told who we are supposed to be. It gets to the point where we even spend a great deal of time telling it to ourselves. We hear the same things so often we come to believe them, whether or not they are the truth. Let that go. Do not listen to what you have been told you are. No one on the outside can know that, and you won't know that if you are only listening to those on the outside. Let go of what you've been told and open up to find the answers. Learn who you are from the inside and then put your efforts into growing that into the best person you can be.

It Is OK

No matter what you're going through, there is no requirement to do so perfectly. You will have bad days, and that is fine. You will discuss your bad days, and that is also fine. We grow by learning to incorporate the good and the bad into who we are and how we live. We learn by expressing what we experience, and by listening when other people express what they experience. No one can grow if we hide the lessons. It's OK to nor be OK. Keep going forward, one interruption at a time.
