What We See

What we see in life depends largely on where we look. There are good and bad in most places, and we will see what we intend to see. The human mind has an amazing capacity to filter based on expectations, but make sure you are not using yours in a way that is harmful to yourself. If you always go looking for the negative, you are always going to find it, but you will not benefit from such a success. Keep that in mind and adjust accordingly.

We Are Nature

People often talk about the human race as though we were something separate from nature but, while there is some symbolic truth to that in the way some people behave, it is not a true statement. We are part of the natural world, the same as every other part, and it is to our detriment when we forget that. We will not stop being a part of nature, but we may stop benefiting from being a part. We can lose our place and lose our way because we have forgotten what we are, but there is an easy remedy. Remember.

Take Every Chance

Life comes at you fast, and you're going to miss opportunities no matter how hard you try. With that in mind, there are two lessons to remember: Don't cling to what is already past, and take the chance when you see it because you may not get another. If you want extra credit you can add keep a careful watch because sometimes you may not even see the chance as it is flying by. Be mindful of the life around you, and do your best to make sure you're living it as it is happening.

Trees And Stones

Take the time occasionally to get out among the trees and stones. Remember that every aspect of your life can be a teacher, and that includes those quiet places where there is just you and the world. Close your eyes and listen. Breathe it in and just be. If you open yourself up to the possibilities, you can learn more in five quiet minutes by a stream than you can in a week's worth of books and routines. Listen to the wind, and learn what the world has to teach you.

No WiFi

Welcome back. I hope you had a good week while we were gone. We certainly enjoyed our vacation. We did some hiking and wandering around, but mostly, this time, we just took some time to relax. Everyone needs to recharge occasionally, and it's good to get out into the trees and trails to do so. I highly recommend it, but now, let's get back into the work week. Never forget, though, that you can take that relaxation with you. Don't let the week beat you down. Take breaks, and take care of yourself.

Be Strong

I cannot deny that there have been many times I have considered giving up. There have even been times, even recently, when that consideration has come close to being realized. Then, inevitably, something happens to remind me of the ones who are watching. There is always someone watching, whether you realize it or not. Someone is looking at your example, and taking strength from what you may not have even realized you were showing. Stay strong and keep up the fight. You are teaching and helping others even in just going forward.

***
We will be in vacation next week for our annual anniversary trip, so there will be no regular updates. As always, I'll share things if I see them. Otherwise, see you the following week. Take care and keep moving forward.

The Most Love

All children know that they need love. This need is encoded within their very existence. What is not so encoded, however, is the understanding of how to get love. For that, children rely on the adults who are meant to be teaching them. The children who are being taught poorly are the ones most in need of love and understanding, but they are also the ones least capable of demonstrating that need in what we would consider a positive way. No one showed them how. Be patient with the ones who need patience. They need more than they know how to show, and you have more to give than you realize.

They Become Who We Tell Them

The human brain is the most advanced supercomputer in existence, and the brain of a child is that computer awaiting the code that will shape what it becomes. Children are like sponges, soaking up whatever is around. They learn from everything, and will learn what we teach them. If they do not learn what we wanted them to learn, it is because we were not teaching what we intended to teach. Guard well what you say and what you show, because every line of that code is being taken in and applied to the whole. Children will learn what we teach them. Teach them well.

The Person You Needed

In my experience, the people who survive trauma at a young live to go in one of two directions: they become some of the most fierce advocates against that trauma you will ever see, or they crumble and become instigators of the trauma themselves. Sometimes the difference is as simple as who is around when it comes time to make the choice. If you know what choice you made, and you know what help you received, think on that long and hard. Be the support you needed for someone else who is facing that decision point. Together we can make the world better.

Begin With Compassion

There will never be a moment in time when we can fix everything in one go. There will always be more to do, and it will almost always seem overwhelming. There is so much to do, and so little that we feel like we can accomplish, but never forget: every little bit that we accomplish adds up. If all you can do is begin, you have added to the good. Make sure you begin with compassion, begin with an eye toward making things better, and let that be your guiding star. Things will add up, and we will make a difference.

The Soul Of The Universe

"Love one another, but make not a bond of love.
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other's cup, but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread, but eat not from the same loaf.
Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone.
Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.
Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping.
For only the hand of life can contain your hearts.
And stand together, yet not too near together.
For the pillars of the temple stand apart.
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow."

Once You Choose Hope

"Out of the huts of history's shame
I rise
Up from a past that's rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise."

Still I Rise

Courage Doesn't Always Roar

"when you face old age and its natural conclusion
your courage will still be shown in the little ways,
each spring will be a sword you'll sharpen,
those you love will live in a fever of love,
and you'll bargain with the calendar
and at the last moment
when death opens the back door
you'll put on your carpet slippers
and stride out."

No Better Exercise

"Lend a hand to one another
In the daily toil of life;
When we meet a weaker brother,
Let us help him in the strife.
There is none so rich but may,
In his turn, be forced to borrow;
And the poor man's lot to-day
May become our own to-morrow."

We Are United

"No man is an island entire of itself; every man
is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe
is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as
well as any manner of thy friends or of thine
own were; any man's death diminishes me,
because I am involved in mankind.
And therefore never send to know for whom
the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."

Let It Be

"Let it go" is a nice sentiment, but not one that is always achievable. What you hold onto may also hold onto you, and the other side may not be inclined to let go just because that has become your decision. Letting go implies a desire to send away, and that may not always be possible or practical. Sometimes it is necessary to let it be instead. Sometimes you have to accept what is and work within the framework available to you. Remember that there is often more than one way to address a situation, and do not get locked into thinking that you must respond in only a certain way. Make peace with your situation, and your situation may be more peaceful than you had believed.

To Realize That You Do Not Understand

No one learns better than the student who is new, the student who comes in without preconceived notions of understanding. No one has a more difficult time learning that the one who believes understanding has already been achieved. We tend to close off our thoughts once we think we understand, and we stop being receptive to new ideas or new perspectives. Stay open. The universe is far bigger than you can conceive, and no human lifetime can encompass all of its mysteries. Do not learn with the desire to get to the end - You never will! - but rather learn with the desire to keep learning.
