Forward Is Forward

I know it can be frustrating, sometimes, when things do not seem to be advancing at the speed you would prefer. It is hard to believe that you are behind, or that you are not accomplishing enough. Do not let that deter you. Life is not a race. Forward is forward and, so long as you are continuing to move forward, you are doing the right thing. You will have times where your movement is faster or slower. You will have times when you movement appears to have stopped altogether. Take breaks when you need them, then keep going. That's how we make progress, one interruption at a time.

Lead The Way

It is not enough to tell people what you believe, to tell people what you think is a better way. Words only go so far, and that so far is really not such a great distance. If you want to make a difference in the world, you must show people what you believe. If you believe in kindness, be kind. If you believe in charity, be giving. Show the world your belief and lead the way toward making things better. Consider this: if you lost the ability to communicate through words, would your actions still convey what you believe?

Children Learn More

We spend a great deal of time telling children what they need to learn, but we often forget that we are showing them things to learn in everything we do. More importantly, what we show them has a far more lasting impact than what we tell them. Think of your own learning. How often did you dismiss what you were told in favor of what you could see in front of you? "Do as I say, not as I do" is an unrealistic expression. They might pretend, but what you say is not what is going to leave the more lasting impression.

Be A Beginner

The Beginner's Mind is the mind that says, "I am empty. Fill me." It is the mind that says, "I am here to learn. Let me see what there is to learn." It is the student, wiling to take risks, willing to get things wrong in order to gain a greater understanding. The Beginner's Mind is more open to possibility, less likely to close the door with a denying, "I already know this." The Beginner's Mind is how we learn, and approaching each day with the Beginner's Mind helps to insure that we are always ready to learn.

What You Already Know

There is hardly anything worse for impeding the ability to learn than the insistence in believing what we already know. In order to learn, you have to be willing to set aside what you think you know, to examine things in the light of not knowing, and be open to the possibility of being wrong. If you believe you already have the answers, you are likely to close your eyes to anything that contradicts those answers, maybe even subconsciously. It's human nature. We don't like to be wrong, but accepting that possibility is the best way to learn.

A Day On The Bank

The mark of true success does not lie in such things as expensive cars or fancy homes. It is not in expensive clothes or shiny new toys. The mark of true success lies in being content enough within your own self that you can sit and watch the waves without feeling a need to intervene. When you do not feel a need to judge, correct, or redesign, you have found the truly successful life. Very few people ever get there, and most will never come close, but it's possible. In the possible there is hope, and in hope there is a worthwhile life.

Everything Needs Food

Everything in this universe, regardless of what it is, needs some sort of food to keep going. What you feed is what will grow. You are not the only source of food for the things in your life, so don't mistake this as a statement that you can necessarily starve out the things you don't like, but you can absolutely encourage the things you do like. Give your attention, give your energy to what you want to see grow, and help it grow. Do everything you can to encourage a better life, and watch your life improve.

Part Of My Life

Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experience mental illness every year. That is nearly 45 million people a year, on average. It's not rare, and it's not something to be afraid of. I'm one of them. Many of you reading this are among that list as well. We do our best with what we have, and that is all anyone can really do. If you are doing that, you're golden. Don't let the naysayers define your life. They have their own issues, and many of them can actually learn from your example. Be a good example.

Don't Become The Emotion

Our emotions are real. They are an integral part of who we are and how we become what we will be, but they are not who we are or what we will be. Emotions are like clouds passing across the sky, here for a moment and then gone. Do not put too much emphasis on such temporary qualities. Feel your emotions, acknowledge why they are there and what you can learn from them, then allow them to be on their way. You have other experiences to come.

Worry Serves No Purpose

Worry is a pretender. It does not help and will not make anything go more smoothly. If there is something you can do about a situation, working on that is infinitely better than worrying. If there is nothing you can do about a situation, worrying will do nothing but make things worse. It is a difficult lesson to master - we are accustomed to worrying just to worry - but leaving worry behind is one of the best skills anyone can learn.

Better Than You Imagined

If you are following my words, I feel safe in predicting that you have at least aspects of your life that did not go as planned. Let me tell you emphatically, that is absolutely okay. Every day is a new beginning. Every day is a chance to start over. Life cannot be plotted on a graph - I begin here; I do this, this, and this; I end up here - but it can always be redirected. You can course correct whenever you choose. You are sailing on waters that are not always cooperative, but you are still the captain. Regardless of where you came from, you can go in amazing directions. Choose, and live.
