Compassion Has No Limit

There is always room for kindness and compassion. Even in our most difficult and painful moments we can take the time to be kind and compassionate. Doing so can make our most difficult and painful moments less difficult and painful. Being kind and compassionate does not mean that you do not fight when necessary. It doesn't mean that you don't set expectations or enforce the rules. It means only that, even in these moments, you remember your humanity and you remember the humanity of those others with whom you are interacting. Do not let your task deprive you of your humanity. Safegard that with kindness and compassion.

Do Your Best

Do your best. It's what you can do, and, if you are honestly doing it, it is all that you can do. Shoot for the stars, but be realistic about the results. Stop beating yourself up because you couldn't do something that you couldn't do. While we're at it, stop being up the people around you for the same reason. Do your best.

Not Too Old

When was the last time you did something for the first time? When was the last time you started something that meant the world to you? When was the last time you dared to set an ambitious goal and then went after it? You are not too old, and it is not too late. Keep learning. Keep doing. Keep living.

Do Good Without Fuss

The best good is often done by those who are too busy doing good to make much noise about it. The most noise is usually made by those who are trying to make sure you only see something quite specific.

Children Teach Us

Have you ever tried to teach a small child an important life lesson, only to have that child come back and point out, "But you said ..."? In their innocence, children are more clever than we sometimes give them credit for, and they see through our complicated excuses like glass.

True Learning

The act of learning something new, truly learning, will change you every time. If you have not changed, you have not learned.

Learn Something New

Even in a discussion when trading ideas, you are only learning when you are receiving. You have two ears and one mouth. Use them accordingly.

A New Way To Think

You can't just put new wine into old skins. You can't just slap new paint over old. You can't just raise a new house over an old foundation. To make something new, and to make it well, you must first strip away the old. You have to be new all the way through.

Take Nothing Personally

Much of the anger and frustration in the world today comes from taking things personally when they are not. We see a movie we dislike and we get angry because we feel snubbed. We hear a song we dislike and we are angry because our desires were not met. The truth of the matter is, there are nearly eight billion people on this planet, and the most outgoing person on the planet can't possibly know more than a fraction of a fraction of a percentage of those people. Most of the activity in the world has nothing to do with you, personally, so don't take on the burden of believing that it does. Even when things truly do go wrong or need to be fixed, you'll find it a far more easy and possibly even enjoyable task if you do not take it personally.

Where Attention Goes

Just as we will often find what you seek, we also grow what we tend. What we focus on, what gets more of our attention is what will grow the most. If we spend more time feeding the negative, the negative will get stronger and more common. If we spend more time feeding the positive, the positive will get stronger and more common. It is within our power to decide, but it requires an active decision. What world do you want to inhabit?

Carry In Your Heart

The human mind has an amazing capacity to find what it seeks. Look for the negative, and you will usually find the negative. Look for the positive, and you will usually find the positive. It's not a perfect system, to be sure, but it is accurate often enough to be a good guide. Look for the good in the world around you, and there will be more good in the world around you.

As We Are

Your opinion of the world around you tells more about you than it does about the world. There are many things in the world about which you do not know, but you know you. What you think and what you see are reflections of your own perspective. They demonstrate what you have learned to see and what you expect to see. If you run into a foul person during your day, you have run into a foul person. If you run into foul people throughout your day, it is more likely that you are the foul person. We reflect what we are, and we describe that in how we perceive our surroundings.

Only One Person

Friends and family will all come and go. Even the dearest and more closely regarded loved ones are not permanent and will not be with you in every moment of every day. There is one person who gets most of your time and most of your attention. If you are not friends with that person, you are missing out on the best of life. That is definitely something worth working on to correct.

The More You Know

Learn yourself. The more you know about yourself, the less the misunderstandings of those around you can cause you harm. The tension, the conflict comes from Am I or Am I Not? Once you know, there is no tension. What other people believe reflects upon them, not you. You are not what they believe. Learn, and decide who you are.

Do Not Fight

Choose your battles. You do not have to accept every invitation to fight that you receive. Do not waste your time or your effort will it will not serve a purpose. At the same time, however, know what you want to achieve. There are more ways to win that victory in battle. A battle that cannot be won in the strictest sense may still lead to the achievement of some other, preferable goal. Know your heart, understand your goals, and do what works for those.

Between The Two

We are not merely one thing or another. We are each different things based on the perception and perspective of the observer, and we are even, at times, the observer. We can be everything, and we can be nothing, but, in the balance, we are something in between. It is between the gates of all or nothing where we must live our lives, and it is within these varied halls that we must chart our course. Do not cling so tightly to one thing that you forget the possibilities. Among all of the various answers available in life, it is rare indeed that only one of the most extreme would be the correct answer. Enjoy the possibilities.

One With The Earth

Whatever befalls the Earth befalls those who dwell upon the Earth. We are inextricably linked. It is only reasonable to keep one's home clean and safe. It is only courtesy to not befoul the home of another. These ideas are not cutting edge philosophy, yet they are so often forgotten. Perhaps it is time we remember.

Start Where You Are

We all make mistakes. We realize them, we regret them, and, far too often, we are crippled by them. We cannot go back and change what we have done, so we sit back and despair. We cannot go back, of course, but we can begin again at any moment of our choosing. We can stop regretting, and we can start to build something new. Let the past be your teacher, not your jailer. Begin where you are, and go forward.

A Single Seed

We are all seeds, each and every one of us. One seed is a beginning. A beginning sets the path. The path is the Way. One seed is all it takes. Let yourself be that seed, and don't worry about the rest of the forest. It has its own seeds, and it's happening around you.

As Good As You Are

We are often tempted to respond in kind, to retaliate. It is common to hear such things as, "But did you see what he did?" Here's the thing, though: If you want to be better, you have to actually be better. You have to make the effort to step up, step forward, and keep going. Making excuses, pointing to the worst examples, responding in kind, none of these things can make us better people. In order to be better people, we have to be better people. It is both that simple and that complicated.

Conquer Yourself

There is a strong desire to make a better world, but we tend to waste time flailing around at things we cannot change while ignoring or forgetting things we can change. If you want a better world, start with a better self. Your example may encourage someone else to do the same. If enough people follow that simple principle, like magic, you end up with a better world.

Who You Are

The biggest roadblock to becoming who you want to be is your imagination of who you are. We have preconceived notions, and these preconceived notions get in the way. We think we know something, so we don't learn. If we don't learn, we can't grow, and we can't become. Let go of who you imagine you are, and allow yourself to see everything as it is.

Happy New Year 2018

Where does the time go? As we welcome the new year, take a moment to reflect on what you have learned and accomplished in the past year. Take a moment to consider what you might learn and accomplish in the coming year. I made a resolution many years ago to not make any more New Year's resolutions, and, frankly, that was the only resolution I ever managed to keep, but don't think of it in terms of resolutions. Think of it as, "What am I going to do today?" and then ask the same question tomorrow. As you walk the Way, the Way appears. That's how we get where we're going, one day, one step at a time. Take the next step to where you want to be, and then take the next one. Pause when you have to, but keep moving forward.

Happy New Year, everybody, from our family to yours. Athbhliain faoi mhaise duit! Namaste.
