Happy New Year 2016

Happy New Year and welcome to 2016. If you’ve had a bad year, this is where you get to leave that behind and start something new. If you’ve had a good year, this is where you get to build on that and keep the trend going. In either case, learn from the past to build a better present. Mix and match if you have to. Most of us don’t have good years or bad years. We just have years, with good bits and bad bits, and we work with what we have. Just make sure you’re grabbing the right bits when you start building your new one.

What are my plans for the New Year? Ordinarily, right about now I’d make a joke about how I don’t even plan for the next weekend (and most of the time, it wouldn’t even be that much of a joke), but I do have a few plans, always subject to change of course.

Hopefully, Heather and I will have the foster licensing finished in the first part of the year. We only have one more official requirement, and that is scheduled to be completed in early January. After that, it’s just waiting for the bureaucracy to do its thing. If you ever feel a need to test your Zen, spend a couple days dealing with the bureaucracy of your local child services department. The wheel grinds on, and it will get there eventually, but the process involves plenty of opportunity to practice patience. Don’t worry, though, we’ll keep practicing.

I hope to have a new novel completed this year. No promises, and I won’t be sharing anything any time soon, but I feel good about something I’ve started. It won’t be anything like the last one but then, this is me, so there will probably end up being connections I haven’t even planned for. That tends to happen. Still, fiction, especially my fiction, doesn’t work well when forced, so this is a good opportunity for you to practice patience. You’re going to need it.

Frequently Interrupted will just keep growing. We continue to add followers on Facebook, and even Twitter (@MyInterruption) is picking up people here and there. I’m working on learning to use the various tools available, and recently added an Instagram account to go along with the Pinterest account where I share many of the pictures that we often post. Our most dependable way of spreading the word, of course, is you, so do please keep spreading. Tell your friends about us and help our community grow. If you have any suggestions, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

Speaking of those pictures that we share, there will probably be less of them on the blog but more of them on Facebook. They seem to be pretty popular on Facebook, where the quick hit of information is all the rage, so I will step up their presence there, but I’m going to focus a bit more on my own specialty in words on the blog. I’ll be writing more often, but possibly less at a time. There have been a number of times, now, when there was something I wanted to say, but I didn’t want to say it in 1,600 to 2,000 words (which is the average length of my little features). Sometimes short and punchy can get the point across even better, so I’m going to stop feeling like I’m required to do the longer forms and focus on just writing what the subject needs instead. There will still be the longer ones as well, never fear. I’m just getting it out of my own head that they’re required. You might be surprised what chains my own habits can be, so sometimes I have to remind myself that I’m the one setting the rules here and I get to unset them if I want. I hope you’ll like the change this brings. As always, let me know.

Here’s to a great year. I hope you’ll come along with us for the ride, and please bring some friends. The more the merrier. Happy New Year!
